The time of the year where Queensland and New South Wales fans go to war and cheer on their state for State of Origin supremacy has once again arrived, and this year should produce three thrilling matches that have fans on the edge of their seats.
Queensland will enter this series looking to extend their seemingly never-ending Origin dominance to eight years, while New South Wales will look to finally deliver for its long suffering fans.
Since being washed out in 2010, the Blues have narrowed the gap, and although they have once again had to go through a change of coach, there has been a lot of improvement since then. The last two series have gone to a deciding game both of which were decided by narrow margins.
The Blues will undoubtedly still be reeling after they lost last year’s third game by one point – the closest they have come since their last series victory in 2005. This will provide the motivation for them to finally get over the line this year.
While for Queensland, the lure of potentially winning 10 straight Origin series before their core of superstars move on will motivate them as they look to keep the shield away from Blue hands for an eighth consecutive year.

Apart from the injury-enforced absences of Brett Stewart and Kurt Gidley, this is a well-assembled New South Wales side which, on paper, looks very strong and threatening. There is no doubt Laurie Daley will be very happy with his players form for their respective clubs at the moment.
It’s no surprise that Jarryd Hayne was selected at fullback, given he was the Blues’ only other obvious choice after Brett Stewart was forced to pull out several weeks ago with his injury.
However I am surprised that Akuila Uate was overlooked for Blake Ferguson, given Uate is a proven performer on the big stage. Ferguson was chosen not only for the way he has redeemed himself following an early-season drunken incident which cost the Raiders Josh Dugan, but also for the great form he has shown since.
James Maloney and Mitchell Pearce have both been rewarded for the Roosters’ resurgence this year, and they have both been the masterminds behind the Roosters’ much-improved attack and defence.

New South Wales: Jarryd Hayne, Brett Morris, Michael Jennings, Josh Morris, Blake Ferguson, James Maloney, Mitchell Pearce, Paul Gallen (c), Robbie Farah, James Tamou, Ryan Hoffman, Luke Lewis, Greg Bird. Interchange: Anthony Watmough, Andrew Fafita, Trent Merrin, John Sutton, Josh Reynolds (one to be omitted)

Queensland: Billy Slater, Darius Boyd, Greg Inglis, Justin Hodges, Brent Tate, Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Matt Scott, Cameron Smith (c), David Shillington, Nate Myles, Sam Thaiday, Ashley Harrison. Interchange: Corey Parker, Matt Gillett, Ben Te’o, Chris McQueen. 18th man: Daly Cherry-Evans. 19th man: Josh Papalii

MISSING IN ACTION: Enforced changes in both camps, with injured Maroons Ashley Harrison and Billy Slater joining Blues forward Glenn Stewart in the stands. Beau Scott comes in for Stewart and Tony Williams returns after sitting out game two with a back complaint. Trent Merrin makes way. Winger Akuila Uate is left out with Brett Morris in his place. Greg Inglis covers for Slater at No.1 with Dane Nielsen brought into the centres. Sam Thaiday is back for Harrison. Mal Meninga opted for Ben Te'o over the damaging Dave Taylor.

FORM: NSW have been the better side for two-thirds of this series but still find themselves with it all to do. After going one down in Melbourne, the Blues returned to Sydney and had to come from behind to level the series. But they only just got there. Queensland was a Brent Tate clean catch away from scoring what may have been the game-sealing try. The Blues held on for a memorable four-point victory but have to lift even further on that effort at Suncorp.

QLD Maroons:
Matt Bowen (North QLD), Darius Boyd (Newcastle), Petero Civoniceva (Brisbane), Cooper Cronk (Melbourne), Matt Gillett (Brisbane), Ben Hannant (Brisbane), Justin Hodges (Brisbane), Greg Inglis (South Sydney), Nate Myles (Gold Coast), Dane Nielsen (Melbourne), Corey Parker (Brisbane), Matt Scott (North QLD), David Shillington (Canberra), Billy Slater (Melbourne), Cameron Smith (c – Melbourne), Brent Tate (North QLD), David Taylor (South Sydney), Ben Te’o (Brisbane)*, Sam Thaiday (Brisbane), Johnathan Thurston (North QLD). COACH: Mal Meninga

NSW Blues:
Greg Bird (Gold Coast), Todd Carney (Cronulla-Sutherland), Ben Creagh (St. George-Illawarra), Robbie Farah (Wests Tigers), Paul Gallen (c – Cronulla-Sutherland), Tim Grant (Penrith), Jarryd Hayne (Parramatta), Michael Jennings (Penrith), Luke Lewis (Penrith), Trent Merrin (St. George-Illawarra), Brett Morris (St. George-Illawarra), Josh Morris (Canterbury-Bankstown), Mitchell Pearce (Sydney Roosters), Beau Scott (St. George-Illawarra), Brett Stewart (Manly-Warringah), Glenn Stewart (Manly-Warringah), James Tamou (North QLD), Anthony Watmough (Manly-Warringah), Tony Williams (Manly-Warringah). MISSING IN ACTION: Tony Williams (injury) and Jamie Buhrer (dropped) are missing from the NSW 17 that lined-up three weeks ago, with Anthony Watmough and Tim Grant drafted in. Grant has been troubled by a back injury but is expected to play. Sam Thaiday (shoulder) pulled out of the Queensland side but there is an able replacement in the reliable Corey Parker. We presume Dave Taylor has recovered from the head knock he received falling out of bed and will play.

FORM: The Maroons made it win No.50 with their 18-10 triumph in game one. Many thought the Blues were a good thing beaten but there is no disputing Queensland won the big moments. The Maroons were not at their best for the full 80 and the worry for NSW is that they might just click here. Williams is a big loss for the Blues because he terrorised the opposition when he came on in Melbourne. But it’s probably evened out by Thaiday’s absence. There is no second chance here for the home side. Lose and series No.7 will be gone.

BLUES: Brett Stewart, Jarryd Hayne, Michael Jennings, Josh Morris, Akuila Uate, Todd Carney, Mitchell Pearce, Paul Gallen (c), Robbie Farah, James Tamou, Glenn Stewart, Luke Lewis, Greg Bird. Interchange: Trent Merrin, Jamie Buhrer, Ben Creagh, Tony Williams

MAROONS: Billy Slater, Darius Boyd, Greg Inglis, Justin Hodges, Brent Tate, Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Matthew Scott, Cameron Smith (c), Petero Civoniceva, Nate Myles, Sam Thaiday, Ashley Harrison. Interchange (from): Matt Gillett, David Taylor, Ben Hannant, David Shillington, Daly Cherry-Evans, Dane Nielsen

This year’s State of Origin promises to deliver the contest that both states have been craving since Queensland’s dominance began in 2006.
This year, the Blues have selected a team they believe is capable of out scoring the Maroons, while the Maroons have stuck true to those who have done it all before.
True to form, the media south of the Tweed has questioned, queried and quibbled over the selection of several of their stars. Again, true to form, north of the Tweed it’s business as usual with all and sundry getting behind the players that have been chosen.
In New South Wales the selection of Jarryd Hayne and Michael Jennings has polarised the media, fans, coaches and ex-players alike. They’re out of form, they’re unfit and you can’t pick someone from reserve grade. We keep hearing it over and over again, splashed across all forms of media.
The only people who seemingly believe in these players are some, and I stress some, of their club fans, along with Ricky Stuart.
Michael Jennings is a curious case. Not since Ray Brown in 1983 has a player been selected for State of Origin from reserve grade. Even more curious than this is that he is in reserve grade to begin with.
Penrith have publicly stated that he is playing New South Wales Cup due to poor form, however having watched about six games featuring Penrith this year I am of the belief there is more here than meets the eye.

NSW centre Josh Morris admits he’ll have his hands full in his return to State of Origin next week, trying to control a rampaging Greg Inglis.
Morris says Inglis is in his best form in years, while his surprise centre partner Michael Jennings won’t have it any easier as he lines up against Justin Hodges.
Morris and Jennings could indeed have the toughest job in rugby league on Wednesday, and have a crucial role in trying to stop Queensland’s bid for a seventh straight series.
Inglis has been in scintillating form at fullback for South Sydney in the NRL this season and moves into the centres for Queensland to partner the in-form Hodges.
The Australian Test centre pairing pose a formidable task for Morris in his first Origin game in three years and Jennings, a shock Blues’ selection after being dropped to NSW Cup by Penrith last week.
“He always plays good around this time of the year,” Morris said of Inglis.
“Playing at fullback, we’ve probably seen in the last six weeks he’s probably played some of his best footy of the past couple of years.

“I’m going to try my damned hardest (to stop him) – that’s what I’ve been picked to do.
“They’re the form centres in the comp, so me and Michael have got our hands full.”
Morris will move across to play at right centre to confront Inglis directly for the first time and says he’s comfortable with the switch.
“I’ve got a job to do there and obviously we’ll speak about that more as the week goes on and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” Morris said.
“And I’m sure Michael will be looking forward to the challenge of marking up on Hodgo. They’re the Australian centres, so it presents a fair challenge.”
With 12 Origin tries from 15 games, Inglis needs one more for the Queensland record and has made a habit of opening the series in style, three times scoring doubles in game one.
But Morris himself is in good touch, demanding a return to Origin for the first time since 2009 with his nine tries for Canterbury this season, including a brace of hat-tricks.
So Morris says it’s not going to be all one-way traffic on the edges of Etihad Stadium in Melbourne on Wednesday night.
“Me and Michael are quite confident in our own capabilities, so we’re looking forward to not only defending against them, but attacking as well,” he said.
He puts his return to NSW colours down to consistency for Canterbury this year and an increased work rate, crediting new coach Des Hasler with reigniting his confidence.

THE man anointed to take over from Darren Lockyer was officially named captain of the Maroons at Monday night’s Naming of the Team dinner.
Cameron Smith – who had deputised for Lockyer as Queensland captain before – said it was a “privilege” to officially be named in the role for the 2012 campaign.
“It’s a very proud moment,” Smith said. “Obviously like earlier in the year when I was given the Australian captaincy – it is a position I have filled before way back in 2008 when Darren was injured. Now it’s a permanent thing.
Captaining Queensland is a privilege and it’s something I have always wanted to do when I was a young boy playing footy, so I am very happy to have been given the job.”
Speaking with QRL TV before the official naming – Smith said given the recent success that has been achieved with the group – it was a good time to be taking over the reins.
“I’ve come in at the right time to take over the captaincy,” he laughed. “This group has been together for a while now (and) obviously we have won a few series together.
“There’s a lot of confidence within the group – and a lot of great leaders as well, so I am very fortunate to have such a great team around me.”
Speaking about their Game I opponents, the Melbourne Storm skipper said his team would have to prepare well if they were to win the opening game against the enthusiastic Blues side.
“They have picked some players who have got a lot of points in them so we are going to have to play extremely well to minimise the points they score,” Smith said.
